Projected translations are like having a second director: they convey interpretation, provide focus and affect pacing and tone. Nic’s titles are, first and foremost, instantly understandable so that the attention of each audience member can return to the stage as quickly as possible. They are lean and simple. Though not word-for-word literal (opera was meant to be seen and heard, not read) they represent the text very accurately.

In addition, Nic’s titles compliment the style, period-setting and staging idiosyncracies of the production–what the audience sees onstage and what they read above it are a seamless whole.

Recognizing that projected translations are really a vital part of stage directing, Nic began writing titles many years ago and has upwards of 100 scripts in his library and is now making them available to opera producers. His titles are custom-crafted to each production and he is not proprietary about the content: the production team is encouraged to make adjustments as necessary during the technical period, as the production comes fully into focus. His turn-around time is fast and he provides an electronic copy (in either PowerPoint or Keynote), a hard script and a cued score. What the company needs to provide are the musical cuts, if any, and basic information about the production style and period-setting. You will find that his rates are very reasonable.
