Adaptations
Opera is evolving rapidly, adjusting to the conditions of the society in which we live.
The great classics were written for different conditions: the theater was lighted, the audience moving in and out of the performance to pursue various activities, the story had to move more slowly and there needed to be repeats of text, so that returning audience members would not miss anything essential.
But we live in different times. Should we make the great classics more accessible to the uninitiated by adapting them to present-day conditions?
Nic’s adaptations are specially crafted editions with a careful eye toward brevity, dramatic flow and coherency. Whether for adventurous opera companies or for training institutions which are looking for shorter versions to accommodate the needs of their students, adaptations have become increasingly attractive and commonplace.
